Military Service
Master Sergeant Sotomayor's journey to public service began in the United States Air Force, where he proudly served for 22 years. During his military career, he demonstrated unwavering dedication to the principles of integrity, service, and excellence. He held various leadership positions, including leading joint teams of Army soldiers and Air Force Airmen across nine overseas combat deployments. After retiring from the military, Guy Sotomayor felt a deep sense of duty to continue serving his community. He was drawn to the progressive values of economic equality, social justice, environmental stewardship.

Combating Poverty: No one in our country should have to choose between food, housing, and dignity. Guy promises to implement aggressive, practical policies that lift people out of poverty.

Improving Healthcare Access: Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. He will fight to ensure that every Alabamian, no matter their income, job, or zip code, has access to high-quality healthcare.

Funding Education: Education is the foundation of opportunity. Guy is committed to significantly increasing funding for our public schools. This means better pay for teachers, modern classrooms, updated materials, expanded arts and STEM programs, and fully funded special education services.

Military Career
Guy Sotomayor initially enlisted in the Air Force in January of 2001 as an aircraft mechanic. After completing his training to repair the A-10 Thunderbolt II, he arrived at Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina on September 11th and was thrust from a peacetime military into a wartime one. While stationed at Pope, Guy deployed to combat in Afghanistan and Iraq four times while earning an Associate's Degree in Aircraft Maintenance.
After completing his first enlistment in 2006, Guy was selected to train as an Airborne Linguist to translate Arabic. He studied Arabic at the Defense Language Institute for a year and a half, even traveling to study at the University of Amman in Jordan. He finished his language, intelligence and survival schools, earning Associate's Degrees in Arabic and Communication Technology in 2008 and was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska.
Although trained as a translator, Guy's technical skills earned him a position as an Airborne Signals Intelligence Analyst, being stationed at Beale Air Force Base in California and flying on the MC-12 Liberty. He deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan five more times, where he flew more than 400 combat missions. During this time he was an aircrew instructor and evaluator.
In 2019, Guy was selected to be an Enlisted Pilot, a career that had not been seen in the Air Force since World War II. He completed his flight training and was again stationed at Beale Air Force Base to fly the RQ-4 Global Hawk. During this time he flew missions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Ukraine and in the Pacific. He was also deployed to Italy to support Ukraine during the initial Russian invasion. During this time, Guy became an Instructor Pilot and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Intelligence Studies with a focus on Middle Eastern Studies.
Guy retired in 2022 and moved to Madison County to work as a pilot for Airbus where he flies the Zephyr, a solar-powered remotely piloted aircraft. He lives here with his daughter Robin. Occasionally, you can find him singing karaoke or piloting small airplanes out of the Huntsville Airport.
Guy's rich history of selfless service and success in a wide variety of challenging fields make him a uniquely qualified candidate to represent Alabama as State Senator.
Personal Life
Outside of campaign and political interests, Guy enjoys spending quality time with his 10-year-old daughter, enjoying the local scenery while piloting small aircraft, and participating in local culture such as karaoke and events supporting the LGBTQ community.
